It’s not just about financial planning…

Today is the start of something special for me. I have been accepted onto the University of Derby’s Master of Science in Psychology course.

I’ve written quite a bit about why I want to study psychology and how I feel it will make me a better financial planner.

But there’s a personal element for me too.

For context, I have 3 children; age 21, 16 and 9. Through my personal experiences and those of family and friends, I have become more knowledgable than I would ever have intentionally set out to be about mental health and neurodiversity. It’s an ongoing journey.

I devour social media content about neurodiversity the way other people follow celebrity influencers or politics.

I buy books about psychology, listen to podcasts about neuroscience. I watch people and try to understand why they behave the way they do. I need to know more than I can learn in this unstructured way.

So the study of psychology is my passion project.

I hope to become a better financial planner and business owner.

And I also hope to become a better parent, a better human, and ultimately a person who can be part of the change I want to see in the world.
